Corinth Canal
Tuesday, October 14, 2025, maritime traffic through the Corinth Canal has been temporarily suspended to allow for critical restoration work, according to an official announcement from the local Port Authority.
The closure, effective until further notice, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and long-term functionality of this vital Greek waterway.
The restoration project focuses on the final phase of stabilizing the canal’s slopes, which have been damaged in the past, leading to significant disruptions in vessel traffic. The Corinth Canal, a key maritime passage connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, serves thousands of ships annually and is a critical hub for both domestic and international shipping.
Authorities have been working over the past year to address technical issues that have intermittently affected the canal’s operations. While no specific reopening date has been announced, the Port Authority will provide updates once the necessary inspections are completed and safe navigation conditions are confirmed.
The Corinth Canal remains a cornerstone of Greece’s maritime infrastructure, and these efforts aim to secure its reliability for years to come.
